The Summer School consists of 4 days of lectures and group exercises. In the morning, all participants will attend a lecture together. In the afternoon, participants will engage in exercises in small groups. The design of the Summer School is based on the solution-oriented model of social science research (Watts, 2017). Through this course, participants will learn how to choose and frame a research question for knowledge impact maximization, identify possible solutions, use mixed methods to choose the best solution, and explore the theoretical implications of the chosen solution. Finally, participants will learn how to communicate their discoveries effectively in presentations and publications. The schedule of the Summer School is shown in the following table.
Participants who intend to join the summer school will be asked to prepare an extended abstract of about 500-800 words that summarizes the gist of a proposed research in social psychology. Before the summer school, participants will read the papers in the following reading list: Reading list
Qualification of Applicants
Postgraduate students and new PhDs (degree completed within the last 5 years) in social psychology and related fields in psychology and related social sciences are welcome to apply to this specialized research training by international faculty. Participants will be divided into 4-5 research groups in exercises and practice sessions and will be mentored by an expert in social or organizational psychology. They will work together in congenial surroundings that allow plenty of time for discussion and fellowship, as well as a chance to hone research skills. Participants will learn how to design research projects and to receive instruction in how to write journal-ready manuscripts for publication in the internationally peer-reviewed journals.

Students who participate in the Summer School have to arrange their own accommodations, the conference organizer can help them to book the room at the Activity Center of Academia Sinica. The cost of per person, for two-person shared room is about USD$ 30 per night, for Single person room about USD$ 45 per night. If needed, the participant can address the need of the dates and the room type in their cover letter.

Bio Choh-Ming Li Professor of Psychology
Dean of Social Sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong
Professor Chiu Chi Yue is a specially appointed expert in philosophy and social science under the National 1000 Talent Scheme and is currently Dean of Social Science, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Psychology and Director of the University Service Centre for China Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
His research covers the social psychology of education, culture and psychological processes, human motivation and intergroup dynamics, areas in which he has made outstanding research achievements. Since joining CUHK, he has established the Centre for Positive Social Science and, with sponsorships from The Hong Kong Jockey Club and Bei Shan Tang, started to promote systematic, innovative and science-informed positive education in primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong.
Dr Chiu received his Bachelor of Social Sciences and Master of Philosophy degrees from the University of Hong Kong, and two Masters degrees and a PhD from Columbia University in New York. He was previously Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Head of Psychology at the University of Hong Kong, and Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois and Professor of Management. At Nanyang Business School in Singapore, he was Professor of Management and Marketing, Director of Research and PhD Studies, Director of the Cultural Science Institute and Research Director of Asian Consumer Insight.
Bio Professor, Business School, Chinese University of Hong Kong
Ying-yi Hong is currently a professor at the business school of Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). She received her PhD from Columbia University in the field of personality and social psychology. Over the past twenty some years, she has taught at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, before returning to teach at CUHK.
Hong’s research interests include culture and cognition, identity and intergroup relations. She believes in interdisciplinary research, and seeks to integrate social psychology, behavioral economics, neuroscience, and genetics to study identity and intergroup dynamics. This integration hopefully will bring new understanding of how culture, identity, and human biology co-evolve, thereby shedding light on the development of humankind in the face of globalization and multicultural exposure.
She has edited over ten books, including The Oxford Handbook of Multicultural Identity, which won the 2015 Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award. Prof Hong has published over 150 journal articles and book chapters and her work has been extensively cited in psychology, education, management, marketing, and global studies. She has received several awards for her pioneering work, including the Otto Klineberg Intercultural and International Relations Award in 2001, the International Society for Self and Identity Outstanding Early Career Award in 2004 and the Nanyang Award for Research Excellence in 2013. Prof Hong was elected Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the Society of Experimental Social Psychology. For eight years, she has collaborated with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences to offer voluntary research development training to Chinese social scientists in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Europe and Australia.
Bio Associate Professor of Psychology, School of Social Sciences, Singapore Management University
Dr. Angela Leung is Associate Professor of Psychology at the Singapore Management University. She received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2007. Her research seeks to understand how people participate actively in dynamic cultural processes in both intra- and inter-cultural contexts, as well as the psychological implications for multicultural competence. As an active agent, individuals recruit cultural schemas and scripts when they construct the meanings of a social situation; they sample and cognitively juxtapose ideas from multiple cultures to generate creative solutions and to navigate the intercultural landscape; and they are motivated by their mindsets and implicit beliefs to make sense of and approach their goals. Angela’s recent research seeks to bring the study of these issues to the next level by examining other important, yet understudied areas, such as the psychological science of cosmopolitanism and globalization, paradox cognition and creativity, and the role of culture in motivating pro-environmentalism. Her publications have appeared in top-tier journals including American Psychologist, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, and Journal of Environmental Psychology. She has an h-index of 23, with total citation counts of 2,838. Angela has edited two books on the psychological science of culture: Cultural processes: A social psychological perspective published by the Cambridge University Press in 2010 and Handbook of culture and creativity: Basic processes and applied innovations published by the Oxford University Press in 2018. Angela is currently the Associate Editor of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of Social Psychology. She is the Lee Kong Chian Fellow in 2017-18 and the Lee Foundation Fellow for Research Excellence in 2009-10. She has received the Seisoh Sukemune/Bruce Bain Encouragement of Early Career Research Award (International Council of Psychologists, 2013), the Award for Research Excellence (Singapore Management University, 2009), and the first honorable mention for the Otto Klineberg Intercultural and International Relations Prize (Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, 2009).

Assistant Professor G. Christopoulos (PhD, Cambridge) has extensive research experience in examining neurobehavioral accounts of human cognition and decision making. A series of studies identified the neural correlates underlying decision making under risk and risk attitudes (PNAS, 2009; Journal of Neuroscience, 2009, 2010). Recent studies have explored the social and cultural aspects of human behaviour employing novel computational approaches (Oxford Handbook of Culture Neuroscience 2015, Nature Neuroscience, 2015, Neuroimage 2015).
Methods: His research agenda combines the two research traditions of decision theory and cognitive neuroscience. Methodologically, he employs behavioural methods derived from psychology; computational methods stemming from game theory, learning theory and microeconomics; and biological measurements such as human neuroimaging using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and physiology (heart rate, skin conductance, facial EMG) and new methods including wearable technology and virtual reality.

Research: His research aims to uncover, explain, predict and improve human decision making in dynamic and complex environments. He is currently conducting studies on neurobehavioral and cultural aspects of individual and group decision-making under risk.
Recently, his Lab is interested in understanding the relationship between human behaviour and the built environment (Neuroscience and Architecture).
Bio Singapore Management University
Chi-Ying Cheng is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the Singapore Management University. She received her Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan. Before SMU, Chi-Ying has taught at Columba Business School. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate-level courses on cultural psychology, psychology of individual differences, I/O psychology and psychology of self. Her research examines the underlying psychological mechanisms and behavioral outcomes of dual identity integration with special foci on culture and gender. Specifically, her work investigates how different strategies individuals use to negotiate their seemingly conflicting social identities such as being Asian and American simultaneously or being a woman with a male-dominated profession influence their attitudinal, cognitive and behavioral outcomes as well as the underlying mechanisms. Chi-Ying also investigates the influence of multicultural exposure on individual and organizational outcomes such as creativity. Chi-Ying’s work has been published in top psychological and managerial journals including Psychological Science, PNAS, Social and Personality Psychological Science, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Leadership Quarterly, and Management and Organization Review. Her work has been selected as Best Paper multiple times in the annual conference of Academy of Management. Her research on identity integration and creativity was featured in New York Times. Besides teaching and research, Chi-Ying serves as an Associate Editor for Asian Journal of Social Psychology and the Deputy Chair of Institutional Review Board at Singapore Management University.
